There exists a broad range of possible relationships.
They reflect the different personal backgrounds of visiting students and
researchers as well as the scheduled length of a stay. In fact, a stay
can vary between a few weeks and a few years. A minimum time period of
4 - 12 weeks is usually required. A stay for approximately 6 month is
recommended and preferred. Collaborations are mainly scientific-technical
oriented and some basic knowledge in computer graphics or related fields
is required in order to get accepted as a guest researcher at INI-GraphicsNet.
In addition to this, non-technical visitors may get involved in administrative
activities.
Five major categories can be described:
-
Practical studies:
This is a short-term visit in order to gain some practical,
hands-on experience.
Recommended time period: 1-6 months
Recommended background: basics in computer graphics or application-related
knowledge, and programming skills or non-programming skills (e.g., multimedia
design).
-
Project support:
Guests are working on an R&D project. This can
be a project that has been jointly defined beforehand and has received
approval from a funding body or guests can be integrated into an on-going
project at INI-GraphicsNet and will carry out specific project tasks.
Recommended time period: based on the project
schedule (> 3 months)
Recommended background: basics of the projects' work topic, programming
skills.
-
Higher qualification (diploma, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral
degrees):
The goal is to carry out some of the R&D work that
is required to receive the respective degree at the home university.
INI-GraphicsNet is able to co-advise theses in German, English, and
Portuguese. One typical piece of work is the preparation of the diploma
or master's theses. This kind of work has a strong look-ahead component.
Recommended time period: 6 months (diploma/master
degree), > 1 year (doctoral degree)
Recommended background: good knowledge of computer graphics or
related background; good performing skills.
-
Sabbatical and post-doc:
Guests belonging to this category usually are interested
in contributing expertise in their key competence area and learning
more about other prominent R&D fields covered at INI-GraphicsNet.
This process is driven by a desire to broaden each other's horizon and
to leverage synergism.
Recommended time period: mutually defined (typically
3-12 months)
Recommended background: peer know-how in a computer graphics-related
R&D area.
After successful completion of a guest stay in one of
the above categories the visiting student or researcher will be awarded
a certificate.
When the sending organization has an official collaboration
agreement (with respect to its curriculum description) signed with
the Darmstadt University of Technology, then a visit can also include
the taking of university classes and courses in Darmstadt and having these
accepted at one's home university. This option needs very careful preparation
in advance.
